25th September to October 4th 2018
Day 1 - Fly from London to Cusco
Day 2 - You will be picked up from the airport and taken to your hotel in Cusco. You will then spend two days in this beautiful UNESCO World heritage City for two days acclimatising. Cuzco sits at around 3,400m above sea level and nestles in the Andes.
Day 3 - Acclimatisation day in Cusco - At 6pm there will be a group welcome meeting at our tour operator who will be our guides for the Inca Trail Trek.
Day 4 - 4.30am!! KM82 - Ayapata Meet our guides in Cusco who will transfer us to KM82 (via a breakfast stop) which is where the big adventure really starts. After registration and formalities we will climb gently up the Cusichaca Valley to the Inca site of Llactapata. Stunning views throughout and we will camp for the night at Ayapata (3300m) Throughout the day your guides will offer regular education and insights into your surroundings. 14km walking in total.
Day 5 Ayapata - Chaquicocha - Today is the toughest day of the trek with two high passes to navigate including Dead Woman's Pass at 4200m. Most people will feel the effects of altitude here. The views are breathtaking of the high mountain ranges and you'll see a wide variety of plant life in the Polylepsis forest. Our camp is situated at Chaquicocha and will afford beautiful views across the valley. 16km walking in total.
Day 6 - Chaquicocha - Winay Wayna - Having made it over the two tough passes yesterday you are treated to a more relaxing day which contains some of the most beautiful scenery that the Inca Trail has to offer, you will walk through lush and verdant cloud forest and spectacular views of the Andes in the distance. Your guides will again stop at various Inca ruins which you can explore. A fantastic day. We will be settled at our campsite by early afternoon.
Day 7 - The day you have waited for! We arise at 2.30am to get to the checkpoint for 3am where we will wait for 3 hours (gulp!) to be allowed to pass where you will hike to the sun gate with breathtaking views over Machu Picchu. On arrival at Machu Picchu you will have a two hour guided tour of the site. When you are ready you can catch the bus for the short trip to Aguas Caliantes where we will celebrate with drinks and food. At around 3pm you will catch the "glass roofed" train along the river valley back to Ollantaytambo. (The train affords great views above of your walking adventure). A bus will then transfer us back to Cusco.
Day 8 - Unwind in Cusco - Maybe time to try a roasted Guinea Pig? (A local delicacy!)
Day 9 - Fly home to London (Flight likely to be overnight)
Day 10 - Arrive London (this might be the next day due to flights and time zones.)
